...because art matters to healthy aging.

Design Advocate, a graphic design studio, recently started an art program that serves the senior community. Our program incorporates art history with visual arts. By blending discussions about great works of art with innovative hands-on art making, these lessons aim to engage elders in the elements of art while developing their critical thinking, language skills and problem-solving abilities.

We aim to provide each elder with a greater sense of self and an enlightened appreciation for their personal culture and heritage. Kim Crossett Neumann, one of Design Advocate's instructors, teaches weekly lessons, right in senior care facilities, that promise to be educational, engaging and fun.

A typical lesson may be to discuss George Seurat's “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of LaGrande Jatte" or to study Dr. Seuss' book characters that inspired much of his writing and then lead this discussion into an assignment in pointillism or purposeful doodling.

The art projects are kept basic, yet interesting... and the outcomes rewarding. Design Advocate brings art to elders for healthy aging.
